Pest Control

This post on the Managing Insects Naturally in the Vegetable Garden, written by Ottawa's own George Bushell of the Gloucester Community Gardens, is an excellent resource.

For identifying bugs, go to BugGuide.

Equipment for dealing with unwanted insects and diseases is in the garden room. This includes some basic ingredients for organic pest and disease control recipes.

Below are pictures of insects we have already identified in the garden.  Click on the name to see if there is a post about controlling the insect.

White Fly:  Eats leaves.  If you have holes, look for this little guy.

Slugs

Slugs are night critters that LOVE the wet.

Prevention
Avoid watering in the evening.

Controls

Option A:  A can of tuna planted to soil level and filled with beer. Empty in the morning.

Option B:  put a pot upside down on the earth.  Slugs will crawl in and you can kill them with salt in the morning.

Striped Cucumber Beetles
Deal with them as soon as you see them (late June, early July) and you won't have issues with their offspring later in the season.

Grasshoppers
We had a far too healthy population of grasshoppers on the roof in 2015.

Prevention
Plant a few plants that repel the little bugs.

Cilantro

Calendula (Pamela has lots of seeds from last year.)

Horehound (like a mint and the bees love it!)  This might be better on the common roof rather than in the plots.

Marigolds, daisies, dill, and mint will attract beneficial insects that consume grasshoppers.
