Rooftop Challenges

Sun.  There is lots of it!  In fact, it is usually MUCH hotter on the roof than on the ground.  When planting, keep in mind the temperature needs of your plants.

Water.  We have a hose, so that makes life easier!  However, your plot can dry out very quickly in the heat of the day.  Check regularly!  By planting a LOT in your garden, the sun will not suck the moisture out of the soil quite so quickly. Talk to your neighbours about watering when you are away.

Soil.  There are no earthworms constantly aerating your plot.  Avoid using black earth since it will become rather compact.  A soilless mixture (potting soil) will not compact and will also retain moisture much better than regular soil.  Please use organic mixes.

Pests and Diseases.  Yes, we have them.  On the green roof, we have deliberately selected plants that attract beneficial insects that prey on the undesirables and attract pollinators.  We ask every gardener to add one plant to your plot that helps with organic pest control.

Root depth.  Long roots can damage the rooftop by breaking the membrane that keeps the water out of the building.  If the roof is damaged, access will be cut off until it is fixed.  It will not be an easy fix and could mean no access for a whole gardening season or two.  Do NOT put plants with roots that go more than 8 inches.  If you aren’t sure, your gardening coordinator is happy to advise you.
